How is the IVF process done?

The IVF process involves several key steps:

  1. Ovarian stimulation – Hormonal medications are given to produce multiple eggs.

  2. Egg retrieval – Mature eggs are collected from the ovaries.

  3. Fertilization – Eggs are fertilized with sperm in the lab.

  4. Embryo culture – Embryos are grown and monitored for several days.

  5. Embryo transfer – A healthy embryo is placed in the uterus.

  6. Pregnancy test – Done about 12–14 days after transfer.

Most women experience mild discomfort during egg retrieval and bloating due to hormonal stimulation, but the procedure itself is done under sedation, so it is not typically painful.

Possible side effects include:

  • Mild bloating, cramping, or mood swings

  • Temporary weight gain or headaches

  • Rarely, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which causes swollen ovaries
